How to Find the Coordinates of a Place
You don't need any special tools. Google Maps gives you exact coordinates in a few seconds:
- On your phone: open Google Maps, find the place, then press and hold the exact spot until a red pin drops. The coordinates appear at the top of the screen, ready to copy.
- On a computer: right-click the spot in Google Maps. The coordinates appear at the top of the menu; click them to copy.
Google gives you decimal coordinates, like 40.7580, -73.9855 for Times Square. That is all you need. Zoom in before you drop the pin so you mark the right building, bench or trailhead, not just the right town.
Formatting Coordinates So They Look Right When Engraved
The same spot can be written a few ways. Any of these works, so pick the one you like best:
- Decimal with directions (our favorite): 40.7580° N, 73.9855° W
- Degrees, minutes and seconds: 40°45'28.8" N, 73°59'07.8" W
- Plain decimal: 40.7580, -73.9855
A few tips. Four decimal places are plenty, since they pin a spot to within about 11 meters (36 feet). Use N/S and E/W instead of a minus sign, which is easy to miss on a small surface. If you can't find the degree sign on your keyboard, leave it out: 40.7580 N, 73.9855 W reads just as well. For a clean look, put latitude and longitude on two lines, or keep them on one line with a date underneath.
How Much Fits on a Compass or Wallet
A full set of coordinates in decimal format is about 22 characters, so there is room for more than just the numbers:
- Compass lid (outside or inside): up to 140 characters. Coordinates, a date and a short message fit comfortably.
- Back of the compass: up to 50 characters. Enough for coordinates plus a date or your initials.
- Inside a wallet: about 70 characters. Coordinates plus one short line.
